ICC World Cup: Australia will bat against Zimbabwe

The latest news from the sports desk reveals that Australia skipper Ricky Ponting won the toss and elected to bat against Zimbabwe.

The defending champions begin their World Cup campaign at the Sardar Patel Stadium, Motera, Ahmedabad.

Ponting said, “There were no injury worries for the four-time winner ahead of the Group A match at the Sardar Patel Stadium, and the Australians were eager to get going. Australia lost both its warm-up matches.”

As expected, Australia is going to play with three fast bowlers, with Brett Lee, Shaun Tait and Mitchell Johnson and with only one off-spinner Jason Krejza.

Australia have been unbeaten in 22 matches in the last two tournaments played in South Africa (2003) and West Indies (2007), under Ricky Ponting.

The Aussies have a superb batting line-up in which Shane Watson, who opens the batting, and Ponting are crucial in the top order to lay the platform for others to build upon.

Watson has performed brilliantly with the bat in ODIs in the last year, having scored 832 runs and Zimbabwe's think tank would have talked about ways of stopping the Queenslander from taking the game away.

Yuvraj believes in winning matches than being strong on paper

The superb middle-order batsman from the home team, Yuvraj Singh feels that it won't matter how strong the team is on paper if they don't win matches.

Talking to media, he said, “Irrespective of everything, our team has been winning matches and that is very important. The 1983 team was a successful team and if we have to prove that we are a good team then we have to win matches. It doesn't matter how strong the team is on paper. More important is to win games.”

Further, the middle-order batsman said, “The key is to bat well in the middle overs and assess the situation. What situation are we in, whether we need to consolidate or we need to build partnerships. It is just what I have been trying to do in the last couple of years.”

"We have definitely thought about the 2007 World Cup in West Indies and the reasons for not qualifying. It's past now and we have made a new beginning. In the last World Cup, we didn't have momentum going. So, this time around it is very important to get the momentum. We have to prepare well and see how we start the tournament," he said.

The dashing batsman said that they have prepared well for the tournament.

"We are preparing very well and are charged up and raring to go in the first game (against Bangladesh). We have a lot of experience in our bowling and batting department. If we can field well consistently, it will definitely help us in the World Cup," he added.

Play for India, not for Sachin, says Steve Waugh

The great Australia's cricket Steve Waugh has told media that Indian players should not be talking of winning the World Cup for Sachin Tendulkar as this is not the right thing for them; the game is bigger than any individual.

While talking to media, the player said, “They should think of winning the World Cup for the team, most importantly for the country.”

He said, while asking by a reporter that what he thought of many Indian players parroting that they want to win the World Cup for Tendulkar.

ICC World Cup Steve said, “I don't think it is the right attitude. You cannot think of winning the World Cup for one player. The game is bigger than any individual. You have to win it for each other. I am sure that even Sachin Tendulkar will like to win it for the team and the country. Yes, if India win the World Cup it will cap off a brilliant career.”

According to him, Sachin Tendulkar would play a crucial role in the tournament. He said, “Tendulkar may not be the star of the tournament, but he is going to play a crucial for India. When you need to take control of the game or stop the opposition, he would play a major part. His inputs will be invaluable.”

However, the master blaster Tendulkar, who will be playing in his sixth World Cup, came close to winning it in 2003 when India lost the final.
